CST110 - Computers and Applications I (Spring 2026)
Computers and Applications I is a foundational undergraduate course designed to develop students’ intellectual, practical, and transferable computing skills for academic and professional environments. The course introduces core concepts of computer systems, including hardware components (CPU, RAM, storage devices), operating systems, peripheral devices, and file management principles.
A major focus of the course is hands-on proficiency with the Microsoft Office 365 suite. Students gain structured, practical experience in:
Microsoft Word – professional document creation, formatting, styles, tables, citations, and mail merge
Microsoft Excel – formulas, functions, data analysis, charts, conditional formatting, and spreadsheet design
Microsoft Access – database design, relationships, queries, forms, and reports
Microsoft PowerPoint – structured presentations, themes, multimedia integration, and professional slide design
Microsoft Outlook – email management, calendar scheduling, contacts, rules, and collaborative planning
In addition, the course strengthens students’ digital literacy, including cybersecurity awareness, phishing prevention, password management, digital citizenship, academic integrity, and responsible technology use.
The learning process combines interactive lectures, live demonstrations, and guided practical exercises. Assessment includes a midterm practical exam, a comprehensive final exam, and a semester-long integrated project where students produce a linked set of professional deliverables across Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
By the end of the course, students are able to confidently create professional documents, manage and analyze data, design databases and presentations, organize digital communication, and integrate outputs across applications to produce a coherent academic or business project.
